A trip down Memory Lane 1981

Pentyrch boys as I see from top left: -

                            Lionel Newman, Dai Richards.

Dai Rogers, Dai Davies, Harold Newland, Robert Czech,

Simon R Atkins, Kerry Beer, John Rees, Russell Howell, Mark Glastonbury, Phillip Davies, Howard Lock.

Goff Beer, Dai James, Tony Dyke (Capt), Alan Evans, John Berry, Kevin Thomas (not Uggy)

                            Ross Phillips, Colin Board.

I may have missed a supporter or two if you are sorry or offended.

The rest look like Bute RFC. players supporters and clubmen. Inc. Ivan Cowey, Mike Spear, Colin Spear, Billy Shaw, Jim Bicker (Capt)

Always look back at the pioneering trip to Bute with huge fondness. The hospitality was moving.

The soon-to-be-lost bottle of Hacktoss Linctus on route I soon forgot about that.

Shared the trip up in Dai Davies's Vauxhall Cavalier MK 1 with Dai James and Phillip Davies.

The score. 16-16 and well deserved draw (concidering the amount of alchohol drank the day before)

The follies were a great venue.

Lionel Newman threw a pint at me for sleeping Russel Howell

I was hosted by the editor of the Buteman newspaper and thankfully Peter Reed solitude and comfort.

The bar at Wemyss Bay with coal fire and pretty challenging gassy beer.

The Ferry crossing and the excitement of arriving for many was our first foreign holiday.

Factor minus 4 was hard to come by.

Zavaronnie's Fish bar, and the one next to the Cri.

FW Woolworths. The museum and trips around the Island.

The Criterion Bar, Golfers, Rabbie Burns Bar, The Bull and the spy not forgetting Jock Mc Wongs where every dish tasted the same but still nice.

But the overall feeling for me was the friendliness and generosity of our hosts, the sheer beauty of the Island and impressive pride in the culture of the Bute folk young and old. can't help thinking that it is a travesty that this wonderful experience has faded.

Simon Atkins.

If you recognize me or anyone in the picture (many thanks to Jim Bicker for the pic) you can update the page as received. (
