Pentyrch RFC v Fairwater RFC – 9 September 2017

Local rivals Fairwater RFC were the visitors to Parc y Dwrlyn for what turned out to be a keenly contested match. The visitors took the lead within five minutes when they converted a penalty goal when Pentyrch players were deemed to be off-side. During the first half the home side played the better rugby and looked the more dangerous but the visitors continually fought back to stay within striking distance. Pentyrch scored their first try through center Ollie Joyce who finished off a good backs move when he ran strongly to score near the posts. Morgan Hayward slotted the conversion. Fairwater reduced the lead by kicking a further penalty goal but before half time another good backs move saw Nathan Williams score in the corner. In doing so he was dangerously high tackled by an opposing player who received a yellow card. At the interval the score was 12-6.

Pentyrch began the second half with a bang. Following another slick backs move Nathan Williams collected another try in the corner, which was not converted. Within a further ten minutes Rhys Dickens finished off another good move to score in the opposite corner. The conversion was excellently added by replacement Tomos James. At this point the home side looked completely in control but the visitors never gave up. They turned to a driving maul game and controlled play in the final quarter. Pentyrch hardly got their hands on the ball during this period, during which the visitors scored three unconverted tries. Pentyrch held on to win the game 24-21 and earned themselves a bonus point win, the second on the trot.

Neither the Youth or 2nd XV had games.

Next Saturday, 16 September, the 1st XV host Treherbert RFC in the first round of the WRU Bowl. The Youth XV play their first game of the season when Llandaff RFC are the visitors. The 2nd XV play Cardiff Quins 3rds. All games kick off at 2:30pm.
