Following an excellent home win on 1 April against Treherbert RFC (29-12), the team put in a disappointing and poor performance on 8 April in loosing 21-44 to Fairwater RFC. Supporters were therefore not looking forward to travelling to unbeaten, and top of the league, Cambrian Welfare RFC. Gladly, the players had different thoughts and nearly pulled off the shock result of the season in the league.
In an excellent game of rugby Pentyrch held the lead until the final fifteen minutes of the game, then circumstances turned against them. Morgan Hayward opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a penalty goal, which was soon cancelled out by one for the home team. Pentyrch’s scrum was equal to that of the hosts and lineouts were even better. The visitors were playing superb rugby in the backs and it was no surprise to see Hywel Williams score a try wide out, following another excellent move. Morgan Hayward converted excellently. Just before the interval Williams scored again, with the ball going through numerous hands before the touch down. The conversion hit the posts. The interval score was 3-15.
The hosts started strongly in the second half and scored a converted try early on to reduce the deficit. Within 5 minutes another great move saw the visitors score in the corner through Will Paddison. Morgan Hayward converted excellently again. The home team threw everything at Pentyrch and only stout defence kept the visitors in the lead. Cambrian did score a converted try and a penalty, but with 15 minutes left Pentyrch still lead 20-22. A disputable yellow card reduced the visitors to fourteen players and with ten minutes left the hosts scored a further converted try (27-22). In the process of Cambrian scoring this try Pentyrch suffered two serious injuries, one delaying the game by 45 minutes. When play resumed, and with Pentyrch still down to 14 players, the hosts scored two further tries, with one converted, to win 39-22.
The Youth XV didn’t play.
Neither the 1stXV or Youth XV have a game next Saturday, 22nd April. The 1st XV next play on 29 April, when high flying Cilfynydd RFC are the visitors. The Youth XV has no further fixtures agreed as yet.
